Difference between psychiatrist, psychologist, psychotherapist, counsellor and coach
- Psychiatrists: A psychiatrist is trained as a medical doctor but specialises in psychiatric health. Not all psychiatrists offer psychotherapy or counselling but The Chat Clinic has medically qualified consultant psychiatrists for therapy who can also prescribe medication if needed. Psychologists, counsellors and psychotherapists are not able to do this.
- Psychologists: A psychologist is not a medical doctor and instead has a degree in psychology. There are several types of psychologists, but The Chat Clinic has clinical and/or chartered psychologists, who trained in the assessment of mental health problems and the treatment of patients. They are chartered members of the British Psychological Society, where the threshold level of qualification is a professional doctorate.
- Psychotherapist and Counsellors: A psychotherapist and a counsellor can be very similar - both are talking therapies. Some practitioners may choose to call themselves counsellors, while others – even with identical qualifications – may call themselves psychotherapists. Traditionally, short-term help focused on a particular problem tends to be counselling, while psychotherapists follow a more lengthy process of gaining insight into emotional difficulties, exploring thought processes, patterns of behaviour as well as reflecting on past and present ways of relating. There are currently no legal requirements for counsellors and psychotherapists to have passed any exams, to have trained properly or to belong to a professional organisation. Although people trained in psychotherapy have usually completed at least a two year course. While there will be legislation about psychological training and the terms that therapists may use about themselves by 2012, there are still some dubious practitioners about.
- Coaching: Some
people with problems will opt to see a coach rather than a
psychotherapist.
Coaching can help enormously in motivating people to realise their
potential
and to live more fulfilling lives. It cannot however replace the sort of
therapy that treats complex psychological problems. Coaching is not a
regulated
practice. Coaching fees tend to be higher than those for therapy. But
sessions
can be longer and it's usual to have
far
fewer sessions compared to psychotherapy.
